About Costa dos Corais Marine Protected Area

Costa dos Corais Marine Protected Area

The Costa dos Corais Marine Protected Area stretches along approximately 180 kilometers of Brazil’s northeastern coast, covering parts of the states of Alagoas (AL) and Pernambuco (PE). Its boundaries encompass a unique coastal ecosystem characterized by extensive coral reef formations, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests. Established in 1997, the area was created to preserve one of the largest continuous reef systems in the southwestern Atlantic, which supports a high variety of marine species including endangered sea turtles, manatees, and numerous fish and invertebrate species.

Geographically, the MPA extends from Porto de Pedras in Alagoas to Tamandaré in Pernambuco and spans over 112,000 hectares of marine and coastal habitats. The coral reefs inside the protected area are among the most significant in Brazil, providing vital nursery grounds for fish and crustaceans. Alongside its ecological importance, Costa dos Corais hosts traditional fishing communities whose sustainable practices are crucial for maintaining the area's health.

For visitors, the area offers exceptional opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving, particularly in places like Paripueira and Maragogi, where underwater visibility and coral diversity are outstanding. Other recreational activities include kayaking, birdwatching in mangroves, and coastal hiking. Notable landmarks include the natural pools of Maragogi—formed by coral reefs during low tide—and the remnants of shipwrecks accessible to divers. The protection of the MPA fosters ecotourism, balancing conservation with local economic benefits. Visitor appeal lies in experiencing pristine tropical marine environments, vibrant coral formations, and spotting species such as green sea turtles and colorful reef fish amidst crystal-clear waters.
